Received an answer from the Academy. As long as we do not trespass on the Kodak Theater property, they will neither hinder nor encourage any protest activity. "We don't get involved in anything like that," the lady I spoke to said. Pretty much what I expected them to say, which is fine. So as long as we stay behind the barriers placed for the ceremonies, we'll be fine. I assured her we had no interest in interfering with anything, and that the action would be peaceful and non-confrontational, the whole idea being to take something negative and try to turn it to good.

On another note, I just realized I hadn't put contact info here. If anyone wants to offer support or services, please email heathdefender@yahoo.com. Your help would be appreciated. :)

current mood: cheerful

So the WBC were at the SAG awards, which gives me great hope that they will also be at the Oscars, and we'll have a chance to give them a nice pantsing. *grin*

Called the Academy today to get info on where and how we could have a presence there. The kind lady I spoke to said she would ask about it and get back to me.

Still looking for someone to help set up a little website. Anybody?

Well, it's raining cats and dogs here in L.A., and I haven't gotten any calls. So I guess this one wasn't meant to be. Okay! We'll concentrate on the Oscar ceremonies, then. I guess we can take comfort in the rain, as it may keep the WBC from being there as well. (I don't have TV; anybody know if they're there?)

lovelynepenthe has brought up P-FLAG's relatively low standing as a charity, as well as their possibly controversial status, so perhaps we should look at other organizations. GLSEN was suggested as one alternative. An Australian gay-related charity would also be a good idea. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Heath Ledger memorial

Ouch! I've just found out that Heath's memorial is TOMORROW at the Shrine Expo Center, starting at 2:30 p.m.

I really don't know if we can swing a presence there, seeing as it's such short notice. But it would be great to try. If any of you are in the area and would like to give it a go, PLEASE comment below, so we can get together and go down there.

Darn. Wish I'd known about this before.

ETA: I just called the Screen Actors Guild. The memorial will be at the SAG Awards tomorrow, so I called to see if I could talk to anyone regarding permission to do the action. Unfortunately, the only person I could get was the after-hours operator, who's only there to take calls about on-set emergencies.

However, I have put the word out with a couple of friends in the gay community here in L.A., and they said they'd have anyone interested get in contact with me. So I may be able to put together a little contingent to go out tomorrow afternoon. If nothing else, we'll be THERE, with a table and sign-up sheets for pledges. Cross your fingers!

You've arrived at the community for Heath Ledger Rant-a-thons. This community was opened to inform people of the effort against the Westboro Baptist Church's presence at Heath Ledger's memorial service and the 2008 Oscars.

Please click on User Info above to get the details on this comm.

If any of you are jiggy with LJ layouts and would like to design something for the comm, that would be sweet. It's set up on Plus level at the moment (in order to take advantage of some of the extra services), so that's what you'd be working with.

At this time, an email has been sent to P-FLAG, letting them know about the plan. Since it's Saturday right now, I don't anticipate a response until Monday at the soonest. I will post as soon as I receive their reply.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who put on the Oscars, will receive a phone call on Monday. I'll be talking with their public relations folks, to see about permission to set up a presence at the event, and possible help in contacting folks in the industry who'd be willing to lend a hand. Seeing as how Heath was very respected in the industry, I don't think there'll be a problem with getting support from entertainment folks!

If you have any other ideas, please join the comm and speak up. There's less than 4 weeks before the Oscars, which is the main focus right now, so time is of the essence. If anyone knows how we can find Heath's memorial here in LA in order to start our action there, please comment here. That's going to be next week, so we'll have to move fast.
