Welcome!

You've arrived at the community for Heath Ledger Rant-a-thons. This community was opened to inform people of the effort against the Westboro Baptist Church's presence at Heath Ledger's memorial service and the 2008 Oscars.

Please click on User Info above to get the details on this comm.

If any of you are jiggy with LJ layouts and would like to design something for the comm, that would be sweet. It's set up on Plus level at the moment (in order to take advantage of some of the extra services), so that's what you'd be working with.

At this time, an email has been sent to P-FLAG, letting them know about the plan. Since it's Saturday right now, I don't anticipate a response until Monday at the soonest. I will post as soon as I receive their reply.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who put on the Oscars, will receive a phone call on Monday. I'll be talking with their public relations folks, to see about permission to set up a presence at the event, and possible help in contacting folks in the industry who'd be willing to lend a hand. Seeing as how Heath was very respected in the industry, I don't think there'll be a problem with getting support from entertainment folks!

If you have any other ideas, please join the comm and speak up. There's less than 4 weeks before the Oscars, which is the main focus right now, so time is of the essence. If anyone knows how we can find Heath's memorial here in LA in order to start our action there, please comment here. That's going to be next week, so we'll have to move fast.

I've created a Facebook group to spread the word. It can be found here. I'm also going to spread the word on GLBTQ, Heath Ledger fan, and any other group I can think of.

I've signed up at Facebook and taken a look at the group. It's great, thank you!

I would like to make a comment there, but I can't figure out the whole "wall" thing, and there doesn't seem to be a link to any faq's. Could you point me towards the info so I can figure out how to do this? Thanks!

If you want to make a comment, you need to join the group. Then a link will appear at the top of the Wall, where the title is, saying something like "Make a new comment". I didn't know that a faq existed, but if I get a link I'll put it up.

Ah, thanks! You'd think they'd have an FAQ, wouldn't you? I guess they expect people to be psychic. :D

Oh, FYI: the URL you have up for this comm doesn't work. It should be "heathdefense.livejournal.com" without the "www". :)

Religion = Freaky

I'm in! For me, it's not about Heath Ledger, it's about anti-hate.

As I posted just today: "The pure, unadulterated evil of people wanting to protest and spew hate as someone's FUNERAL, because of a role he played in a movie. It's bad enough that the are rubbing their hands in (clearly UNholy) glee that a young man is dead. But that they think it's a splendid idea to go and make a an already painful time into even more of a nightmare for a grieving family? How dare these assholes call themselves 'Christian?' I'm not quite sure they deserve to call themselves 'human;' is there a subspecies for ignorant, petty, arrogant, hate-filled apes? If not, perhaps there should be."

So, yeah, count me in. Keep me posted.

It's really basic cowardice on their parts. Notice how they never pester Jake Gyllenhaal, who not only was in the movie but whose character was even more into the affair than Heath's was? Targeting funerals is a totally pussy thing to do, because the target is dead, and the family and friends will obviously be too grief-stricken to undertake any kind of action against them. It's the classic pattern of a bully, and that's all they are - pissy schoolyard bullies.

Thank you for signing up. Heath's memorial is tomorrow, so I'm not sure we'll be able to do anything about that, but the Oscars are definitely something we're aiming for.

I respectfully suggest that we find a different group to donate proceeds of this campaign to. PFLAG has received a one star (out of four) rating from Charity Navigator, indicating that in terms of financial strength that PFLAG is well below industry standards. I would suggest GLSEN, which focuses on gay and lesbian youth. They sponsor the Day of Silence and work to end harassment of gays and lesbian in American schools. Their financial information can be found here. I also think that we could more easily get wider support for this. A group advocating for gay marriage could easily drive away some of our most important allies against WBC: honest to God, real life Baptists. Gay marriage can be construed as partisan, but protecting school children from bullying is considerably more difficult to stand against.

Since Heath Ledger is Australian, perhaps an Australian GSA-type organization would be an appropriate recipient.

Or an organization helping, for example, homeless veterans, if this campaign were extended to funerals of military servicepeople.

Hm. Thank you for the info. I had chosen P-FLAG because it was suggested to me by an interested party, but I see what you're talking about. I'll post a request for suggestions on Australian charities.
